Helping the street children

I believe it is great that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) intends to help them. I will applaud any sincere effort. It is easy to say this or that will not help or that it is too little, but let the critics shut up and come with constructive criticism. There are many ways to help the poor, and the NGO's do a great job and if the DSWD finds some ways as well then so much the better.

In the article: "DSWD prohibits street caroling" there is an interesting statement I want to focus on.

The paragraph that made me amazed states: "Secretary Soliman said this program is not the solution for the increasing number of street children but a first step towards a sustainable and permanent solution that will keep them off the streets for good."

Let me first of all say that I believe that it is right to do an effort for the street kids in Metro Manila and their families. In Isaiah 1:17 it says: "Learn to do good; Seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow."

What I would like to comment, is that it is imporant to see the bigger picture. It is right that it is not only a matter of keeping the kids off the streets, but to help their families as well. Good point there.

If these families get help I hope this effort becomes a role model for other cities in the Philippines. I am sure that other less fortunate people in other parts of the Philippines would be happy to travel to Manila to get a better life. Believe me, word spreads fast. However, I believe they should be helped where they are! It is a greater help, because that is where their family members and network is. I hope this will not become a pillow to sleep on for all the other cities, communities and barangays - sending the poor to Manila.

The government should make an effort to help the poor all around the Philippines, not only in Metro Manila.
